    The Electoral Race of 1868

    • Grant ran as a Republican with his vice president being Schuyler Colfax (the at the time speaker of the house) he ran against democratic candidate Horatio Seymour with his vice president candidate Francis Blair, Jr.
    • Certain states were not allowed to vote due being unreconstructed or were still considered United States territories.
    • Grant won the popular vote with 3,013,650
      (52.7%)
    • Grant was selected unanimously as the republican candidate due to his popularity after being the commander of the union force during the civil war
    • His campaign slogan was “Let us Have Peace” and he supported policy like reconstruction, suffrage for all men, and immigration to name a few.

    The Electoral Race of 1872

    • Grant ran as the incumbent president but Schuyler Colfax did not run as the vice president being replaced by Henry Wilson as they face multiple party’s but the main opponents were democrat candidate Horace Greeley and his running mate Benjamin Brown.
    • Grant won the popular vote of 3,598,468
      (55.6%)
    • The race is also included the first ever female candidate Victoria Woodhull with her running mate Fredrick Douglass
    • Grant ran the same slogan and policies that he did in the previous election of 1868.
  • Grant Administration

    Grant’s Administration Successes

    • Grant created the Force Acts which were used as ways to stop violence that was growing in the United states after the Civil War these acts were very effective against the first incarnation of the KKK crippling them with the third act allowing Grant to use military force against them and other hate groups.
    • Grant signed the 15th amendment into the Constitution allowing Black men the right to vote.
    • Established the the Department of Justice to deal with legal issues that happened during the time of reconstruction

    Grant’s Administration Failures

    • There was rampant corruption that followed his presidency this was largely due to the fact that Grant was not a politician and made poor judgement on who was in his administration.
    • An example of a corruption cases that his admin took part in was Credit Mobilier of 1872 where many members of congress were bribed by a railroad company that did not want to be investigated for fraud.
    • Grant’s admin had to deal with the economic depression that happened in 1873 that left many people unemployed and lead to many bank failing.

    1862

    Grant captures two forts that end up giving him the nickname “Unconditional Surrender Grant” due to how he would only accept that kind of surrender

    1863

    Grant lead the Vicksburg Campaign that ultimately caused the splitting of Confederate forces.

    1864

    Grant lead the Overland campaign that was trying to destroy the confederate army and force Lee into surrender however he was not successful but was able to cripple any offensive capability the confederacy had.

    1864

    Grant becomes the General-in-Chief of the Union army getting the supreme command of all union forces.

    1865

    Grant leads the Petersburg siege that for nine months crippled what was left of the confederate forces causing Lee to eventually surrender

    Grant accepts Lee’s surrender leading to the end of the civil war

  • Grant’s Early Life

    Grants early life overview

    • Born April 27, 1822 in the state of Ohio son of Jesse and Hannah Grant.
    • Grant was very good in taking care of the horses that was on his family’s farm and was very good at dealing with horse that were unruly.
    • His father put Grant into West Point Military academy due to them offering a free education as long as he served in the military after his time there Grant did not want to go but was convinced by his father to go.
    • Grant served in the War against Mexico where he was a lieutenant in the infantry and he would serve under the future president Zachary Taylor.  
    • After military service he married Julia Dent and during his wedding three of the people that attended would later become confederate generals that he would have to fight during the Civil War
